Getting injectable fillers before the summer kicks into full swing is a great way to plan ahead, especially if you’ll be busy packing for vacation and other summertime fun. But there’s one little thing you should know: UV rays from the sun and tanning beds can break down the hyaluronic acid in your fillers, making your results fade away more quickly.
While this doesn’t mean that you can’t soak up any sun, you will want to take some extra precautions to help your fillers last all summer long.
1. Wear Sunscreen and Seek Shade
Protect your skin (and filler results!) by wearing daily sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, or SPF 30 or higher when outdoors. Don’t forget that UV rays can reach your skin through glass, so sunscreen is a must even when sitting by a sunny office window or driving in your car. We recommend the sunbetter® line from skinbetter science®. It offers broad spectrum protection in a tone-adapting, creamy lotion that provides a hint of color. Use it as a primer under makeup or in place of a light coverage foundation.
You can also wear hats and sunglasses to give your skin a break from the sun. Grab a trendy wide-brimmed hat to double as a fashion statement and sun protection!
2. Pair Fillers with Antioxidant-Rich Skincare Products
Antioxidants in skincare help to protect against free radical damage caused by UV exposure. Work with your skincare professional to help you choose the best antioxidant and anti-aging skincare products for your skin’s needs. We are particularly fond of SkinMedica® TNS Advanced Essential Serum, which is rich in antioxidant ingredients. The right medical-grade skincare products can help to prolong your filler results, no matter the season.
3. Wait a Few Days before Getting a Spray Tan
Swapping a spray tan for traditional tanning? Great! Just make sure you wait a few days after getting fillers to get your glow on. The same goes for self-applied sunless tanners at home. Placing too much pressure on areas treated will filler too soon can negatively affect your final results.
