If you’re weighing your options for injectable wrinkle treatments, you’ve likely come across two of the most popular treatments: BOTOX® and Dysport.® Many of our patients ask us what the difference is between BOTOX and Dysport, and which one is best suited for their needs. The short answer is that they are both types of botulinum toxin injections with slight differences in formulation and consistency. For a more detailed answer, read our guide below.
Botulinum Toxin Injections & How They Work
Both BOTOX and Dysport are FDA-approved injectable treatments made from botulinum toxin type A. This neuromodulating protein temporarily blocks the nerve signals to targeted muscles, preventing them from contracting. As a result, your skin appears smoother and dynamic wrinkles become less visible.
Common treatment areas for both BOTOX and Dysport include forehead lines, crow’s feet and “11 lines” between the brows. The effects of both brands are temporary, typically lasting 3 to 4 months before gradually fading away. For some people, Dysport results may appear more quickly than with BOTOX, though both can take up to 2 weeks to see full results.
Although both BOTOX and Dysport share the same active ingredient, they have subtle differences in formulations.
When Might BOTOX Be Best?
BOTOX tends to be slightly more concentrated and has a slower diffusion time, meaning it spreads more slowly than Dysport. These qualities make BOTOX ideal for smaller areas that require more precision, such as lip lines and crow’s feet. However, BOTOX can also yield excellent results in other areas.
BOTOX results are typically fully developed within 5 to 7 days, although it can take up to 2 weeks for swelling to subside and your final results to be visible.
When Might Dysport Be Best?
Dysport tends to have a slightly thinner consistency, allowing it to spread to larger areas more quickly than BOTOX. This makes Dysport a good option for larger areas like forehead lines or glabellar lines between the brows.
Dysport results may develop more quickly than BOTOX results, taking around 2 to 3 days compared to 5 to 7 with BOTOX. Just as with BOTOX, however, it can take some additional time for swelling to diminish and your final results to become visible.
